Never would I have imagined in a thousand years to see this unravel in this small city state.
My heart bleeds for the pro-democracy protesters of Hong Kong.
I pray for their political leaders to see the light and choose humanity over dirty, rotten, corrupt politics that can only be upheld by state-sanctioned thuggery.
They first took away the book sellers, the journalists, and the writers. Suppression of freedom of expression is a despotic regime’s first line of terror.
Until we are faced with such insidious incidents ourselves, we never realise how fortunate we are to live in this part of the world, privileged to have all the freedoms we desire.
But we must never remain apathetic. We must never stay selfishly silent while our friends and neighbours around the world put their very lives at risk to fight for their fundamental rights.
Martin Luther King once said, “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”
Remember Niemöller’s famous poem? It starts with; “First they came for the….”
